The Station Master was the focal point of any railway station, he was responsible for the supervision and efficient running of his station.
The Station Master on the Richmond Line carried out all safe working procedures and was responsible for the safe and efficient operation of trains and conveying train movement information to the Train Controller. The SM's duties also included ticket issues and assisting any passengers needs or problems.
Our display features safe working instruments, ticket rack and date press, a variety of telephones and safe working books. In this display the genuine Seth Thomas clock beats out the correct time of day. The Seth Thomas clock was the standard time piece used in most Station Masters offices throughout the State. Each day at 1:00pm a time signal was transmitted down the telephone lines from the master clock at Central. It was the duty of each Station Master to adjust his clock to show correct railway time.
The red box in the photo is the Richmond line cash box. Each day around 8:00pm this box was secured by padlock in the guards compartment of the regular passenger service. The station staff at each station was responsible for depositing their days takings, which was secured in a small leather bag in the cash box.
The display also features an authentic booking office window, which through it may be seen a 600 class railmotor waiting to form the next passenger service to Blacktown.
