THE SIGNALMAN

Signalman

In keeping with past practices, Blacktown signal box was the first signal box in NSW to be fitted with rotary switch mechanisms. The large mechanical frames having been progressively replaced by smaller power operated equipment over the past fifty years, until today where most installations are controlled by computer key boards.

Our display featured here is based on the former Blacktown signal box and its rotary switch frame, which was installed in 1954. The train location diagram is representative of the development of the eighties. The diagram is known as a positive indication diagram, which means that the trains appear on the diagram as lights, each light being fitted with a double filament. The Seven Hills diagram is of the earlier negative indication type, which means that all lights were illuminated and the passage of the train was illustrated by the light extinguishing as it passed through the section.

In addition the museum is currently restoring a miniature lever frame, which was removed from Sydenham signal box a number of years ago. Also we have a GRS pistol grip frame, awaiting restoration, as well as an extensive collection of train location diagrams have been obtained and on display.
